A Research Centre was opened at Jersey War Tunnels in March 2003 to
house documents and photographs of the German Occupation of Jersey not previously
exhibited.
As part of an ongoing investment programme, the Research Centre is designed to meet the aim of achieving Museum Association standards of collections management whilst making the data and objects more accessible to the genuine researcher.
Accessibility is seen as the key to the underlying desire to facilitate the education of students and to provide a general resource for research.
The Research Centre is managed by a Collections Manager who is responsible for accurately recording the details of the many thousands of items held in the collection and formulating the policy for their safekeeping.
The Centre is seen as part of a serious commitment to the care and guardianship of the archive and reserve collections.
The Research Centre houses the paper archive in such a manner that the appropriate professional standards for the storage of archival documents will be observed as closely as possible. It has been fitted with two computer terminals, each with a user-friendly search facility for image and data retrieval from the collections databases and a library of books and other written material relating specifically to the Occupation. For the benefit of the virtual visitor it is the company’s intention to incorporate the databases into the newly-constructed Jersey War Tunnels’ website later in due course.
